Violist Emlyn Stam is active as a chamber musician, soloist, pedagogue and performance researcher in the Netherlands and internationally. Since 2014 he has been artistic director of the New European Ensemble an international ensemble for contemporary and 20th century music.
As a soloist Emlyn Stam has made numerous appearances for Dutch radio and television. He performed concertos with the Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra d’Espinho (Portugal) and the Schönberg Ensemble. Emlyn has also performed at numerous festivals such as Festival Vlaanderen, the Kuhmo Festival in Finland, Sound of Stockholm, Connect Festival, Giverny Chamber Music Festival, International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht and Grachtenfestival Amterdam. His many chamber music performances have included concerts with the Parkanyi Quartet and regular appearances with the Ysaÿe Trio of which he is a founding member. The trio released two c.d.’s for the Dutch Record Company.
As a teacher Emlyn regularly gives masterclasses in both viola playing and chamber music. He taught at numerous conservatories in the Netherlands, Estonia, China and Sweden. He currently teaches at the Fontys University for the Arts in Tilburg.
Emlyn is an active music researcher and completed his doctorate at the Academy for Creative and Performing Arts at the Leiden University in 2019 with a dissertation entitle In Search of a Lost Language: Performing in Early-Recorded Style in Viola and String Quartet Repertoires. His research focuses on late 19th and early 20th century performance practices. He is regularly invited to give guest lectures on his research such as at the University of Leeds, the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Altviolist Emlyn Stam is actief als kamermusicus, solist, pedagoog en artistiek onderzoeker. Hij treedt op door heel Nederland, Europa en daarbuiten. Hij is sinds 2014 artistiek leider van het New European Ensemble een internationaal ensemble voor hedendaagse en 20e eeuwse muziek. In deze rol was hij betrokken als maker van meerdere multidisciplinaire voorstellingen waaronder 1984 na de beroemde roman van George Orwell met Edward Snowden en Boris van der Ham en de film Ships Vanishing in the Horizon met componist Mikel Urquiza.
Componisten waaronder Oene van Geel, Kate Moore en Martijn Padding dragen nieuwe werken aan hem op. Emlyn heeft vele concerten voor de Nederlandse radio en televisie gespeeld. Hij was solist bij het Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra d’Espinho en het Schönberg Ensemble.
In 2019 behaalde hij zijn doctoraat bij de Academy for Creative and Performing Arts van de Universiteit Leiden voor een artistiek onderzoek In Search of a Lost Language: Performing in Early-Recorded Style in Viola and String Quartet Repertoires (https://openaccess.leidenuniv.nl/handle/1887/79999). Zijn onderzoek is gefocust op laat 19e- en vroeg 20e-eeuwse uitvoeringspraktijk. Hij gaf lezingen en lecture-recitals over dit onderwerp bij University of Leeds, Hoschscule der Künste Bern, Guildhall School of Music en Surrey University.
Emlyn is docent altviool en hoofd onderzoek en theorie bij Master of Music aan de Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Tilburg. Hij begeleid onderzoek en is betrokken als docent bij de Ensemble Academy van het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag.
Als kamermusicus speelt hij regelmatig concerten als lid van het Ysaÿe Trio. De eerste cd van het trio verscheen in 2013 op de DRC label en een tweede CD met pianiste Hanna Shybayeva kwam in 2015 uit. Hij treed vaak op bij diverse festivals waaronder het Kuhmo Festival in Finland, Sound of Stockhom, Connect Festival, Giverny Chamber Music Festival, Internationaal Kamermuziekfestival Utrecht en het Grachtenfestival.
Emlyn heeft tussen 2008-2014 jaar als plaatsvervangend aanvoerder altviool bij het Residentie Orkest in Den Haag gewerkt. Hij werkte als gast-aanvoerder bij Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Welsh National Orchestra, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Nederlands Kamerorkest, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest en Opera de Toulon.
Hij voltooide in 2006 zijn Bacheloropleiding aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium en in September 2008 zijn Masteropleiding bij ditzelfde instituut. Hij studeerde bij Ferdinand Erblich en Vladimir Mendelssohn. Hij volgde masterclasses bij Pinchas Zukerman, Michael Tree, Yuri Bashmet, Tabea Zimmerman en Kim Kashkashian.
